I’ve loved pictures for as long as I can remember!! In high school I was on the yearbook staff and was editor my senior year. I loved creating layouts and filling them with pictures! I always wanted to learn how to take better photographs but never really pursued that until a few years ago! Once I started taking classes, I couldn't learn it fast enough!!
When I graduated high school I pursued a career in medicine - Radiologic Technologist 1st, then Radiation Therapist and finally Medical Dosimetrist. Medical what??? I've only met one person outside my field that knows what that is. It is an obscure profession but believe it or not has a lot of similarity to photography (at least in my opinion). I design treatment plans for cancer patients using radiation. The physician gives me tumor volumes on a CT scan and I design beam arrangements such that I don't overdose any critical organs like your lungs, heart, kidneys, etc. Setting exposure and some of the camera design reminds me of the physics behind Radiation Therapy.
It has been truly rewarding career and I still do that full time but now I have a second career! I love filling my weekends with Photography!!
I cherish images of my Grandpa! I lost him when I was 17. I always felt a special connection to him growing up and for 30 years I’ve missed him. Pictures are what I have left and a few momentos that belonged to him. They make me smile and remember him when I look at them! So I believe in getting in front of the camera whether you want to or not because it will leave a legacy for our families and loved ones that they will treasure when we are gone.
I have this portrait of me when I was about 2 years old I think. The story goes that the local photographer in our town wanted to enter this image he took of me, in a photography contest. He did and it won an award!! I don’t know any more details than that but how cool! Several years later he offered it to my mother. She bought it and it hung it in my room growing up! A number of years later when I was out on my own, I asked if I could have it and she let me. The photographer, Pete Comer did a beautiful job! I’ll always be grateful that he chose that image, sold it to my Mom and now I have it!!
I believe in photography because I have to slow down and really look at people, take some time with them and then I get to appreciate their outer beauty while I’m photographing them. But it also makes me appreciate their inner beauty! Everyone in front of my camera is incredibly beautiful or handsome!!
I believe in laughter because it is one of the happiest sounds I've ever heard and it can bring a smile to anyone's face!
I believe trials and tribulations grow our character and without them we wouldn't have any!
I believe snuggles with my dogs and cats should happen everyday because animals matter and deserve to be loved and treated kindly and humanely!
I believe in finding that thing you are passionate about and dedicating time to it routinely because life is too short to not do things that bring us joy and peace!
I believe in saying what you mean and meaning what you say because it keeps us honest with others and honest with our feelings!
I believe in drinking sweet tea because I'm a good southern girl and it makes me happy!
I believe in kissing your spouse hello and goodbye always because nothing in life is guaranteed or promised!
I believe in paying attention to the details because that is how we continuously improve!
I believe in never giving up or giving in because I believe perseverance and commitment will make a marriage last!
I believe fear means go because fear is what holds us back from pursuing our dreams and being who we were meant to be!
I believe in building fences not walls because boundaries with ourselves and others keeps us emotionally healthy, walls isolate us and keep us from deep & meaningful relationships!
I believe in creating images that will be cherished for a lifetime so that as we grow older we can look back at those images and they will tell the story of our lives!
