Looking back through my photography archives is always a treat, but it is extra special when the face on the screen belongs to family. Today, I’m revisiting a beautiful session from last August: my great-niece’s first birthday portraits.
While her big birthday celebration featured a “Wild One” theme, for her formal portraits, we leaned into a timeless, boho-vintage aesthetic that captured her sweet personality perfectly.
This session was a true family affair. My niece (Teagan’s mama) was there to help coordinate, and we were joined by my sister, the one and only G Momma.
G Momma stepped into the role of creative director and stylist for the afternoon, bringing along a curated collection of props that made the session feel like a fairytale. We had:
Watching my niece and sister interact with Teagan was the highlight of the day. There is a specific kind of joy that comes from three generations celebrate a milestone.
To wrap up our golden hour session, G Momma surprised us with a beautiful handmade cake she’d baked specifically for a cake smash.
While I’m keeping those messy, “diaper-only” memories private for the family to cherish, I have to tell you—it was the most “polite” cake smash I’ve ever witnessed! Instead of the typical face-first dive into the frosting, she was much more interested in a gentle exploration. It was a quiet, curious, and incredibly sweet end to a perfect afternoon.
Seeing these photos is a reminder of how quickly these “firsts” pass us by. These images aren’t just files on a hard drive; they are a time capsule of who she was at twelve months old—curious, stylish, and surrounded by a family who adores her.
Time moves fast, but photos let you hit the pause button. If you have a little one with a birthday on the horizon, I would love to help you design a session that reflects their unique personality. Whether we’re using family heirlooms or starting from scratch with a new theme, let’s create something beautiful together.
