Graduation season in Charlottesville is always a whirlwind of emotion, but Lucy’s celebration this past May proved that sometimes the best moments are the ones you don’t originally plan for.

Celebrating years of hard work at UVA, Lucy and three of her closest friends gathered their families for what began as an afternoon at a local vineyard. However, as any photographer (or graduate!) knows, the universe occasionally has its own timeline. Between a late shuttle and some stubborn Virginia rain clouds, our initial window for photos was closing fast.

A Seamless Shift to the Farmhouse

When the timing at the first location didn’t quite line up with the weather and the venue’s guidelines, Lucy’s mom made the quick call to move our entire coverage to their dinner destination: The Farmhouse at Veritas.

The team at Veritas Vineyards was absolutely wonderful. Even though we hadn’t coordinated the photography session with them ahead of time, they were incredibly gracious and welcoming. Their staff made the transition effortless, allowing us to focus entirely on celebrating the graduates and their families.

Golden Hour & Graduation Joy

As if rewarded for our flexibility, the clouds parted just before we arrived at the farmhouse. The rain had washed the landscape clean, leaving behind a lush, vibrant green that only May in Virginia can produce. The lighting was nothing short of stunning—soft, golden, and glowing perfectly across the vines.

We spent the evening capturing:

• The Final Four: The graduates together, celebrating their shared journey and bond.
• Generations of Family: Heartfelt combinations of parents, siblings, and extended family members who traveled to be there.
• Golden Hour Portraits: Timeless images against the rolling hills of the Blue Ridge.

A Beautiful Ending

What started with a few logistics hiccups transformed into a gorgeous, intimate dinner celebration. I spent a couple of extra hours with the families, documenting the laughter and the joy of this milestone.

Looking at these images, I’m struck by how perfectly the light captured the mood of the evening. I am obsessed with the results and so grateful to Lucy and her family for their trust and quick thinking. It was the perfect send-off for these four impressive graduates!
