They say rain on your wedding day is good luck, but what about rain on your bridal portrait session? When you’ve invested in the perfect gown and professional hair and makeup, a gray sky can feel like a daunting guest. However, Kelly’s fall bridal session proved that with a little bit of trust and a lot of flexibility, the unexpected moments often turn into the most beautiful memories.

The Best Laid Plans

Kelly, a stunning North Carolina bride, had her heart set on the rugged beauty of the Virginia mountains. Our original itinerary was a photographer’s dream: starting at the Humpback Rocks Visitor Center, moving to the iconic Ravens Roost, and finishing with the sunset at 20 Minute Cliff.

But as I drove toward the Blue Ridge Parkway that October afternoon, the clear skies faded into a persistent mist. By the time we met at the visitor center, the fog had settled in, and the rain was officially here.

Pivoting with a Purpose

Understandably, Kelly was worried. When you look that radiant, the last thing you want is a downpour. But Kelly is a total trooper. She wanted those mountain views, and she was willing to follow my lead to find them.

With her mother, sister and sweet Golden Retriever in tow, we became a mountain-scouting convoy! Here is how we turned a rainy forecast into a gallery of wins:

• The Parkway Peek-a-Boo: Just as we were about to leave the Parkway, we found a dry pocket at the very last overlook before Waynesboro. We jumped out and captured some gorgeous, moody portraits before the rain closed in again.
• The Roadside Revelation: While heading toward Route 151, I spotted a classic black fence framed perfectly against the mountain ridgeline. I’ve never pulled over on the side of a road for a session before, but the view was stunning and it wasn’t raining! We hopped out, and Kelly (and her pup!) looked absolutely high-fashion against that rural Virginia backdrop.
• The Final Destination: To ensure we got those essential shots with her dog, I ended the day at the Saunders-Monticello Trail. The open landscape and wooded paths provided the perfect and peaceful end to a whirlwind day.

The Winning Shot

Kelly needed the perfect bridal portrait to display at her wedding in North Carolina this past December. Despite all the locations we visited, her heart landed on one of those spontaneous photos from the side of the road.

The shot featured her looking radiant in her gown, the mountains in the distance, and several round hay bales scattered in the field behind her. When she chose it, I reached out to ask if she wanted me to edit the hay bales out for a “cleaner” look. Her answer was immediate: “No, I love them!” It was the perfect testament to her style—organic, authentic, and beautifully unplanned.

A Note on Trust

This session was hectic and unpredictable, but I am obsessed with the results. The photos have a unique, ethereal quality that you only get when the weather decides to show off.

Kelly told me that I “saved the day,” but the truth is, her adventurous spirit saved the session. She trusted my eye, even when it meant standing on a roadside or chasing the rain breaks. To all my future brides: don’t let a forecast steal your joy. Sometimes “Plan B” results in the most stunning portraits of your life.
