When you photograph a couple’s engagement session at their venue a year prior, you get a front-row seat to their love story taking root. Returning to Hardware Hills Vineyard for Maddy and Zach’s wedding day was an unforgettable experience. Seeing the very fields where they shared a quiet wine toast during their Save the Date shoot now filled with all the people who love and support them most was incredibly sweet.

Heartfelt Heirloom Details & Pre-Ceremony Moments

The afternoon began with thoughtful, handmade touches woven into every detail. Maddy crafted custom keepsake pins for Zach to pin inside his jacket, as well as pins for their parents. Tying the generations together, Maddy wore her grandmother’s ring, secured to her bridal bouquet with delicate lace preserved from her mother’s wedding gown. Even their pets had a special nod—custom cocktail napkins featured illustrations of their dog, Mildred, and cat, Gene, declaring, “We do, too!”

Among the groomsmen details, Zach’s massive Virginia Military Institute (VMI) combat ring stood out in all its glory. Holding up such an impressively heavy ring for detail photos takes a little behind-the-scenes magic—a quick trick with dental wax did the job perfectly to capture its iconic craftsmanship.

Maddy shared a private first look with her dad, brother, and bridesmaids in the quiet intimacy of the bridal suite. The moment her Dad turned around and saw his daughter as a bride, he broke down in tears, pulling her into a tight, emotional hug that set the tone for a heart-filled day.

A Porch Ceremony Filled with Faith & Laughter

With a tropical storm looming over Virginia all weekend, rain was a constant concern. Nestled safely under the porch at Hardware Hills Vineyard, guests stayed dry and cozy. Aside from a few light sprinkles, the skies held back completely, allowing us to capture every single portrait and outdoor moment without a drop of heavy rain.

Family friend and officiant Rich delivered a heartfelt message grounded in scripture, reading two Bible verses and speaking warmly about both Maddy and Zach. He highlighted Maddy’s signature quirky sense of humor—a quality that showed through while she was reciting her vows. When her mind went blank, she casually turned to Rich to ask if he could repeat the line for her, sending the entire gathering into genuine laughter.

For their bride and groom portraits, the air was completely still, so my second photographer stepped in to work some team magic—throwing Maddy’s veil for those dramatic flying veil shots and holding it perfectly in place for the sweeping veil portraits! Maddy’s gown was as light as air, but that heavy veil was definitely a workout, and she was more than relieved to unclip it and breathe easy once we finished those portraits.

Toasts, Stories, and an 8:30 PM Glow Wand Send-Off

The reception moved indoors for an evening filled with incredible toasts and celebration. Maddy’s dad raised a glass to their journey—tracing how God’s plan brought them together across Georgia, Arizona, New Mexico, and Virginia.

Zach’s best man, Bryce, had the room in stitches with a tongue-in-cheek “history lesson” on the Scottish origins of the best man role—recounting how he first met Zach on VMI’s Trapper Ski Range over a decade ago. He affectionately recalled his first trip to Arizona where Maddy calmly took charge of a stubborn horse, noting how proud he was to see the woman she’s become and the incredible man Zach is.

Maddy’s maid of honor, McKenna, brought down the house with nostalgic stories from their college rodeo days at New Mexico State University. She reminisced about living in their single-wide “Trailer Oasis,” sleeping on cots in horse trailers with Mildred, eating coupon fast food, and the time Maddy took care of her during a chaotic finals week. As McKenna shared, Zach seamlessly became part of that world, supporting Maddy exactly as she is while still joining in on late-night FaceTime calls to talk about Mexican food and white sauce.

In the middle of the reception, everyone gathered outside under the night sky with glowing wands, creating a vibrant, light-filled tunnel to send Maddy and Zach through. Right as I packed up my gear following their glow wand exit and started the drive home, the skies finally opened up and the rain began to fall—a perfect ending to a flawless day at Hardware Hills.
