Rustic Roots & Historic Charm: Nicholas’s Senior Session at Humpback Rocks

For Nicholas’s senior session, we headed to the Humpback Rocks Visitor Center. We traded the typical mountain overlooks for the character around the visitor center. The area is a goldmine of textures, featuring historic log cabins, weathered wooden fences, and wide-open landscapes bordered by dense woods. It was the perfect setting for a Western Albemarle senior who feels right at home in the outdoors.

A Country Western Aesthetic

Nicholas arrived with a style that was classic and rugged, which leaned fully into a Country Western vibe that felt authentic to his lifestyle. He stuck with a reliable base of jeans and boots for the entire shoot, rotating through three distinct looks:

  • The Rugged Layer: A white shirt paired with a jacket, which looked sharp against the old-growth timber of the log cabins.
  • The Essential Flannel: A checked flannel shirt over a white shirt that provided a great pop of pattern against the split-rail fences.
  • The Black Button-Up: A clean, black button-down for a more polished finish in the open fields.

The setting really complemented his athletic build—a testament to his time spent on the football, lacrosse, and wrestling teams.

Brothers & Best Friends

While we focused on Nicholas for his senior portraits, he wasn’t alone for the adventure! His mom Lavonne, his dad, and his brother all came along for the afternoon. Lavonne had a secondary goal for the session: capturing her two sons together.

We took advantage of the rustic surroundings to get some great shots of the brothers, including some fun moments with their Labrador Retriever . There is a genuine bond there that was easy to capture, especially with their dog added to the mix. It made for a relaxed, natural environment that kept everyone smiling.

The Truck in the Field

To wrap up the session, we moved to an open field to feature Nicholas’s truck. Parking it out in the open, in front of the fall foliage, gave the photos a sense of freedom and scale. For a guy who loves fishing and heading out with friends, the truck is a huge part of his daily life, and it served as the perfect final “prop” for his senior gallery.

Cheers to the Class of 2026!

Nicholas, it was a pleasure working with you and your family. Whether you’re on the field at Western Albemarle or out on the water with a rod in your hand, you have a bright future ahead. I hope these photos serve as a great reminder of where you started as you head off on your next adventure!

Capturing these milestones is exactly why I love senior sessions so much. There is something special about documenting this turning point in a student’s life, especially when we get to include the things—and the people—that make their story unique. If you are looking to capture your own senior year in a way that feels authentic to you, I would love to chat! Head over to my senior page to see more of my work and book your own custom session.
